On the influence of self-similarity on optical burst switching traffic

چکیده
In this paper we provide a characterization of OBS traffic (burst size, interarrival time and scaling behavior) when the input traffic is long-range dependent. The analysis shows that the influence of selfsimilarity on blocking probability is negligible, since the arrival process can be assumed to be Poisson in the timescale of interest for burst blocking. However, the impact for optical buffer dimensioning is significant. On the other hand, the scaling region is shifted to larger timescales while traffic variability at low timescales is increased. These findings serve to accurately dimension number of output ports and optical buffers in OBS routers when the incoming traffic comes from a large population of Internet users.

Effect of Ingress Buffering on Self-Similarity of Optical Burst Traffic
Recently, optical burst switching and aggregated optical packet switching have gained significant exposure as possible future mechanisms for routing aggregated IP traffic over all-optical core networks. However, the limited buffering capacity in all-optical networks presents a major challenge, as current IP traffic displays strong selfsimilar properties. Reducing the burst loss rate of such lon...
متن کاملA Survey of Burst Assembly Algorithms for Optical Burst Switching (OBS)
A lot of research has focused on the need to develop an all-optical next generation network. That is, the development of a network where both transmission and switching are all performed in the optical domain. Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has so far received more attention than its predecessors for such a solution. Burst assembly is one the most crucial elements of OBS. The objective of this p...
متن کاملMultiresolution analysis of optical burst switching traffic
In this paper, a Multiresolution Analysis is conducted in order to study the self-similar features of Optical Burst Switching (OBS) traffic. The scenario consists of an OBS backbone with input traffic from a large number of Internet users, that generate Poisson-arriving heavytailed bursts. The results show that long-range dependence is preserved at timescales longer than the burst assembly time...
متن کاملAnalysis of Delay Variation with Burst Size In Optical Burst Switching In the Presence of Aggregate Self-Similar Traffic
Considering that optical networking is still in early stages of its evolution, Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is widely recognized as the most feasible data forwarding mechanism for the next generation Optical Internet that could be realized using currently available optical technology. OBS forwards data in a form of bursts of packets assembled and disassembled in the electrical domain in order ...
متن کاملDynamic OBS offset allocation in WDM networks
An investigation is carried out into the traffic characteristics of an OC-192 link (9953 Mbps), based on the IP packet size distribution, traffic burstiness and self-similarity. The Generalised Exponential (GE) distribution is employed as a suitable model of interarrival times of bursty traffic flows of IP packets whilst self-similar traffic is generated for each wavelength of each source node ...
